GoLocalPDX | TriMet’s Per Capita Ridership Declines as Billions are Spent on Light Rail

GoLocalPDX | TriMet’s Per Capita Ridership Declines as Billions are Spent on Light Rail

The 'cost per ride' figures are extremely misleading.

Light rail needs lots and lots of support personnel that are not included in that number.

Controllers, Supervisors, ROW personnel, switch maintainers, signal techs are just a few.

The light rail apologists always leave out the HUGE cost of constructing the light rail in the first place. 'That money alone makes the figures bogus.

Regarding the 'recession'. We have studies the facts on that and it turns out the so called 'great recession' was barely a hiccup to Trimet.

We did our own investigation on this matter, all the figures were provided by Trimet but were not charted.

RANTINGS OF A FORMER TRIMET BUS DRIVER: A Trimet driver writes

RANTINGS OF A FORMER TRIMET BUS DRIVER: A Trimet driver writes

I find it quite ironic that so many Trimet Operators bitch about working for Trimet, yet nobody ever quits.

~~>That's actually wrong, I quit solely because the job became tortuous for me. I would have continued working there had the management not been so fucking horrible. The truth is most people are wage slaves and can't just pick up and leave because its intolerable

Workplace morale heads down: 70% of Americans negative about their jobs, Gallup study shows  - NY Daily News

And lets be honest can we, Trimet is not honest in the training what people will be facing as a bus driver. Transit bus driving is not for everybody that's for sure. Horrible work shifts, no weekends or holidays for years, the worst runs for years. Its a shit job and if it didnt pay good nobody would do it except total losers. There already is too many total losers driving bus but at least most of the Trimet drivers are pretty damn good, and they are all there for one reason...PAY AND BENEFITS, that's it. Only a crazy person would actually aspire to drive a bus

TriMet budget's good news: No fare increases (again), better service, new buses | OregonLive.com

If Mcfarlane thinks its 'vital' to get concessions from his union employees to the level of crummy health insurance that his office workers get then he is gonna have to wait for another arbitrators decision.
There is no way we will agree to his complete annihilation of all his current retirees into this health plan he has devised that is suited to office workers.
Trimet retirees have already suffered a 20+% decrease  in their pensions, his proposal will in reality cause a 50% decrease in current retiree pensions.
Even the Greeks only suffered a 20% hair cut, Mcfarlane wants to kill his retirees.

TriMet is committed to equity and affordability: Guest opinion | OregonLive.com

I've met with and conversed with Mr Bell and believe he is genuinely trying to do the right thing.

But I do want to say this: You cannot survive as a Trimet executive by challenging anything that the top executives (mcfarlane) are doing or saying. Reading material that is written by any member of the Trimet white collar staff needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

New Portland Light Rail Bridge strings across the Willamette (Photos) | OregonLive.com

New Portland Light Rail Bridge strings across the Willamette (Photos) | OregonLive.com

Let me start this by saying I am not a 'right wing anti transit tea bagger'.
If you must know I voted green party in the last election. Those people that attempt to paint everyone who has  opposite opinions from themselves as "nuts' are nothing but the 'liberal' (for lack of a better word) example of the same thing they accuse the tea baggers of.  Intolerance and closed mindedness.

No matter how many pretty pictures they produce, not matter how many 'socially relevant' names or contests to find names, this is a pork project costing $1.5 billion to a town that already had transit service ,it adds nothing to the already existing network.

There are so many places that could have used that $1.5 billion to actually improve transit services rather than change them from one mode to the other.

Pork Definition:
"""1: Personally motivated spending of government funds by politicians. Spending the wealth of the people but not in the interests of the people."""

Truthfully ask yourselves, who exactly is this project benefiting?  It's sure not the people who use transit that much is obvious.

Six Reasons the Treasurer should say no to the CRC - BlueOregon

Six Reasons the Treasurer should say no to the CRC - BlueOregon

The overwhelming evidence that this is a bad project comes from a multitude of reliable sources and all sides of the political fence yet it keeps alive.

Why does it stay alive? Because the people that stand to make fortunes off this boondoggle are connected to the highest levels of Oregon government.

It's pure unadulterated cronyism in its most crystalline form.

And since the most powerful people in government want this for their pals it might very well happen no matter what.

It's "our tax dollars at work" aka Crony Capitalism;

TriMet's managers, union need to step it up on rebuilding: Editorial Agenda 2014 | OregonLive.com

TriMet's managers, union need to step it up on rebuilding: Editorial Agenda 2014 | OregonLive.com

""" The agency's unfunded liability of $850-million-plus
to pay for the health benefits of current and future employees. The
debt, joined by the need to find another $274 million to pay pension
liabilities, looms menacingly,
undercutting the promise of a stable future."""

~~~>OK wonderful and the City of Portland has an unfunded liability of over $3 BILLION and I don't see you guys making a big deal over that! Why are there no editorials about that?
"""With cruel irony, the City of
Portland simultaneously polishes its green, mass-transit-happy reputation worldwide."""
~~~>Depending on which periodical you are reading the most credible worldwide articles give Portland a barely average rating.  The reputation you refer to is basically endless public relations campaigns which are bought by some media without question. When your walking around downtown Portland it appears that mass transit is on every street. But the further you go from the center of downtown the less and less transit is available. It's a good system for sure, but its not anywhere near world class standards.

"""But it also stressed that a corrosive
lack of trust between managers and the rank and file undercuts any
chance of achieving the kind of collaboration that will diminish fiscal
risk
ahead."""

~~~>Let me explain as a former employee, Mr Mcfarlane came into power at Trimet with his "new sheriff in town" mentality and has been conducting a war against his employees since the day he arrived.
"""We couldn't have said it better. On the heels of an
audit requested by the 2013 Legislature, neither TriMet nor the ATU can claim
not to know precisely what needs to be done."""
~~~~>How bout this, instead of a management that continually thinks about how it can manufacture raises for itself how bout a management that gives back something. All I see from this management is self serving behavior at the expense of the employees and the riders.

Anti-rail measure signals challenge in region's governance: Editorial Agenda 2014 | OregonLive.com

Anti-rail measure signals challenge in region's governance: Editorial Agenda 2014

There are very valid reasons why there is such an uproar against the light rail agenda, not least of which are that the citizens have voted NO ON IT more than once, yet the oligarchs put it in anyway.  The installation of Light Rail puts people out of homes and businesses and it a HUGE headache for everybody that is intending to drive in the area and this inconvenience is measured in YEARS.

Light rail does NOT decrease traffic congestion and even with Portland's reputation as being the 'leader' in 'smart' planning are traffic congestion problems get worse each year.

Light rail has it purpose and can be a great transit option, like the Trimet blue line which is an example of a very successful project that could not be duplicated with bus service. But even the Trimet blue line is faulty due to its street car speed through downtown.

Personally I'm not convinced that corridor needs any 'high capacity' transit, just more frequent bus service more hours of the day could do the trick over there.

But those of us who have been following these issues for years know that light rail is not about transit at all, its about DEVELOPMENT and offering government subsidized transportation to the private businesses that decide to locate along these lines. Transit has nothing to do with light rail.

And light rail is also about the money, the obscene dollars that go to influential local contractors long  with the obscene  profits. What was the last cost amount? $200 million per mile?

And if the FED's were not handing out the money for most of this nobody would be building it.

And finally Trimet's reputation, executives who have no problem handing themselves huge raises and pensions while crying about their lack of money. The arrogance of Trimet is at least 1/2 of the reason there are so many people opposed to them and their projects.

Lane Jensen Given Suspended Sentence for Harassing TriMet Spokeswoman

""Jensen published hate-filled intense YouTubes against me, "I'm gonna
make you go crazy!" At Center Street he yelled "I'm gonna get you!"
There were a series of You Tubes he photoshopped."""

~~~>Come on that video was laughable, I thought it was hilarious you actually thought it was scary? Gettoutta here!
 """The threat was implied, just as Roberta Altstadt's threat was implied.
It's the behavior for us that BECOMES THE THREAT! For her they pulled
out Cyberbully laws. For me it was go fuck yourself.""
~~~>I can't disagree with you there

"""The fear I went through was being a target of rage and instability from a
complete stranger. My fear escalated because of long ongoing cyber
stalking/bully and workplace bully attacks from Al Margulies Rantings
Blog who was mentoring Jensen. Margulies and Jensen are of the "us
against them" mindset"""

~~~>Interesting analysis  indeed.  REMEMBER FOLKS THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY and Ellen has her side which she fondly embellishes and turns innocent circumstances into heinous crimes.
You need to be aware that Ellen sued me twice, each time for $7500. In the first suit she got $100 for her trouble and she was admonished for continuing to file suits against me.
Listen for yourself the judge make the ruling in the first case. The judge found she was full of shit just like her post here is mostly shit.
SORRY ELLEN YOU WANTED TO DREDGE THIS UP AGAIN.
Lane Jensen Given Suspended Sentence for Harassing TriMet Spokeswoman
Lane Jensen Given Suspended Sentence for Harassing TriMet Spokeswoman
""Altstadt testified during this morning's sentencing hearing, saying Jensen's 31 text messages made her fear for her safety. ""
~~~> BS her never made one threat against her, trumped up BULLSHIT

"""His plea deal means prosecutors dropped 30 other counts of telephonic
harassment—one for each text he sent to the spokeswoman. Each charge
carried a maximum sentence of six months and a $2,500 fine.""

~~~>Prosecutorial  abuse if there ever was. If you don't take the 'deal' you could spend 15 years in prison. And they call it the "justice" system. What a joke1
""""He chose to laugh about it and say the agency was scared of him,"
Altstadt said. "I on my own decided to confront him. There was no
conspiracy here, just me trying to protect myself.""
~~~> I don't believe for a second that she decided on her own to confront him, no way. I also don't recall he 'laughing' about it although I do recall him saying the agency was 'scared of him' I always reminded him that Trimet was never scared of any of the bloggers, we are a minor irritation at most.

""" During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors painted Jensen as a stalker
who orchestrated an Internet bullying campaign through his blog.""

~~~>WRONG! All he wanted was answers to his questions. Deliberate distortion.
""Lopez appeared scornful of Jensen throughout the hearing, comparing him
to a blogger who had run an extortion site where he accused people of
having sexually-transmitted diseases."""
~~~Jesus Christ, this judge is off the wall. That is absurd, what a ludicrous comment to make.

"""Mr. Jensen, you seem to enjoy being bathed in public attention," Lopez said. "You have my attention. What do you want to say?""

~~~Yes Lane enjoyed that, so what?
I'm going to request the audio of this hearing and post it too my blog, I wanna hear for myself how all this was represented.
Thanks Aaron Mesh for doing such a great job covering this story and the implications it may have had.
Portland-Milwaukie MAX line: TriMet starts looking for 'duplicative' bus service | OregonLive.com
Portland-Milwaukie MAX line: TriMet starts looking for 'duplicative' bus service | OregonLive.com
People seem to miss the point, which is TRIMET IS NOT INTERESTED IN TRANSIT in reality , they are interested in TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT and transit oriented development needs rail so developers can be assured that they will always have government subsidized transportation to their businesses.
The less bus service the more people are forced to live on light rail lines.
Every time they cut a bus line it forces transit dependent people to move. I saw this for myself when I used to drive the 67 bus and it was  cut  on Sundays. I knew at least a dozen people that moved to developments on the light rail line.
This is the real agenda, how to get people to move along the rail lines. The best way to do that is too limit existing bus service around the lines.
HAPPY OLD YEAR, AND THE ONE TO COME! | From the Driver's Side
HAPPY OLD YEAR, AND THE ONE TO COME! | From the Driver's Side
. Only one has fallen while boarding, and she bounced right up being the young filly she was, and thank God she wasn't injured.
~~~~~~>I had the happen once in the middle of the night on springville road, this idiot is driving his back on the wrong side of the road without a light and I can see him coming towards me in the distance so I stopped. What did he do? He tried to maneuver in between my bus and a ditch. Well guess what? He went down the ditch and the bicycle fell forward and he went flying over it. I just left, he is the one that did it let him figure out what to do next.

"""Only two people have called me "asshole" or worse""
~~>And once you learn to ignore that stuff you can call yourself a 'professional'

""This isn't an easy job, but it's a good one.""
~~~>Depends on what you are used to doing for work. I found Trimet the worst of the 3 transit districts I worked for granted they were the only 'big city' transit I ever worked for. And if you have not had a serous incident yet then you don't really know what you are up against. After you have your first serious incident you will have a better understanding of what you are up against there.
Good luck and happy new year keep on writing!
Concern over taxes, crime stir readers after call for light rail in Forest Grove | OregonLive.com
Concern over taxes, crime stir readers after call for light rail in Forest Grove | OregonLive.com
There is nothing wrong with light rail 'per se' but then again Forest Grove has a population of 21k, similar to Milwaukie. I think the Trimet 57 is a far better option for a town that size. The reason they push these things is the HUGE money that is required to build them and the HUGE profits the come from that. Developers love it because they have 'permanent' government subsidized transportation to their apartment boxes and/or labor centers.
20 years from now they should study this option.
"""After all, those budget-crippling health-care, retirement benefit and pension costs didn't go anywhere in 2013."""
~~~>Is there some particular reason you're using this language? As usual its the same tiresome propaganda which leads me to wonder about you Joe. Our 'budget crippling health care' is less generous than the BART workers just got, the pension is useless now because its the ridiculous 401k instead of defined benefit, and Trimet is hiring and promoting like a drunken sailor. Funny how that works, hire so many people, lots of them standing around of course, then create the appearance they cost too much. Wonderful Joe that you are so helpful to the Trimet management in demonizing the union workforce
